Fly Fishing Influencers, and why they suck.

Fly Fishing Influencers, and why they suck.

“Fly Fishing Influencers.”

Even the name makes me cringe.

Maybe it’s just me, but the minute someone starts calling themselves an “influencer,” I start wondering who’s actually being served. The fish? The community? Or the affiliate links?

Fly fishing doesn’t need gatekeepers. It doesn’t need celebrities. It doesn’t need someone convincing you that happiness lives on the other side of a $1,200 rod, $900 waders, and a bunch of gear you’ll probably never use.

The fish don’t care what logo is on your rod. They don’t know if your reel was machined from aerospace aluminum or found at a yard sale. They definitely don’t care how many followers you have.

What this sport does need are storytellers.

The underdogs. The people quietly sharing tales of blown out days, cold mornings, campfire conversations, and the moments that actually matter. The folks who write because they love the experience, not because they’re trying to hit this month’s sponsorship quota.

The best fly fishing advice you’ll ever get won’t come from anyone with a discount code. It’ll come from the old guy who fishes the same stretch every Tuesday. From a buddy who finally figured out a tide and nailed that monster redfish. From someone who simply loves being outside enough to tell you about it.

If you’re new to fly fishing, don’t chase influencers. Chase inspiration.

Read stories that make you want to grab your rod and disappear for a few hours. Follow people who remind you why you wanted to start in the first place, not people trying to convince you that your gear isn’t good enough.

Because somewhere between the cast, and the quiet, you might discover that fly fishing was never about buying your way in.

It was always about getting lost long enough to find a little more of yourself.

So tell me, who you do you follow on social media that you feel is doing it for the love of the sport and not “for the gram”. Go ahead and tag your most beloved accounts that share stories and helpful info without trying to shove unnecessary products down your throat. They deserve to be heard regardless of follower counts and algorithms.
