Fly Fishing and Mental Health

Fly Fishing and Mental Health

June is Men’s Mental Health Month, and I can’t think of a better time to talk about something that’s helped keep me grounded when life has tried its best to knock me on my ass: fly fishing.

For a lot of us, it was never really about the fish. It’s about getting away from the noise, the pressure, the endless notifications, and the weight we carry every day. It’s about finding a stretch of water where nobody needs anything from you and the world finally shuts the hell up for a while.

There’s something about the rhythm of a cast, the sound of moving water, and standing alone in a river that cuts through the clutter. For a few hours, the anxiety, stress, anger, and everything else riding on your shoulders gets a little lighter.

Fly fishing isn’t a cure. It won’t magically fix depression, PTSD, anxiety, or the hard things life throws at you. But it can be a lifeline. Sometimes all a man needs is a reason to get outside, take a breath, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

For the last 12 years, I’ve volunteered with Project Healing Waters, helping veterans navigate physical and emotional battles through fly fishing. I thought I was signing up to help others. Truth is, they probably helped me just as much.

Some of the most honest conversations I’ve ever had happened knee-deep in a river or sitting at a fly-tying bench. I’ve watched men carrying unimaginable burdens find connection, purpose, and a sense of peace on the water. I’ve seen walls come down and friendships built when people finally realized they didn’t have to carry everything alone.

One thing I’ve learned: stuffing your emotions down doesn’t make you tough. It just makes the pack heavier. We need to kill the idea that men who talk about their struggles are weak. Real strength is facing your demons head-on, speaking the truth about what you’re carrying, and asking for help when you need it.

If you’re struggling, reach out. To a friend, a family member, a counselor, or a fellow angler. You don’t have to fight every battle alone.

And if fly fishing has helped you through a dark patch, SHARE YOUR STORY BELOW. Someone out there might need to hear it today.
